Introducing GreenCheckmark: A unique camera app that produces digitally signed photos and videos

· Billy Lo

It works just like your existing camera app, except that its output is digitally signed using an open standard, C2PA, led by Adobe, BBC, Google, Sony, and many others. Viewers can independently verify that the copy they are viewing is unmodified. Any cropping or AI/human edits will break that signature.

The idea is very similar to the signed PDF files you are already familiar with.

Enterprise use cases

Organizations, platforms, and newsrooms can roll GreenCheckmark out to staff, sellers, and partners with commercial terms and SLA-backed support.

Marketplaces and sellers

Marketplaces can offer the GreenCheckmark tool to their sellers so they can post signed photos on their listings. Prospective buyers can independently confirm that product photos were captured on a real camera and have not been doctored, filtered, or generated by AI; this will raise the trust level of listings and reduce disputes.

Real estate and realtors

Realtors and property managers can offer buyers an easy way to verify that listing photos are unedited. In a market where heavy retouching and virtual staging can mislead, signed photos give buyers confidence that what they see is how the property actually looks.

Newsrooms and media companies

People already on the scene can capture signed originals you can verify, so you do not have to send a staff photographer out every time you need a trustworthy file. That dispatch is a cost you pay day in and day out.

Please contact support@evergreen-labs.org if you are interested in trying it out.

For journalists and creators who are keen to share authentic images

Shoot in GreenCheckmark and the file carries a signature that says three things: it was captured on a real phone camera, nothing has changed since that capture, and — if you choose — where and by whom (identity is established by Sign in with Apple or Sign in with Google).

The Pro version is built for people who publish under a name or a masthead. You can move the banner, switch to a small icon-only badge, and add your organization’s logo and URL.

Note for viewers: a valid signature gives you a stronger signal that you are seeing an authentic, unaltered photo. It does not, however, speak to the truthfulness of what is depicted in the signed photo. For that, you still need to use your own judgment.

You can help by trying it out and sharing the idea

The standard features are free, with no ads, and we do not sell your data. You are not the product. Your images are yours. GreenCheckmark is a non-profit initiative from Evergreen Labs.

iOS is on the App Store. Android is on Google Play.

If you know someone who may benefit from this, please share it with them. A like or a share helps spread the word.

This is made for conscientious news creators so their content can stand out from the crowd.

It is also designed for newsrooms to lower their operating costs so they can continue to publish trustworthy content in a challenging market.
